The US State Department renews the travel ban on its citizens to North Korea

"The Department of State has determined that there is a continuing grave risk to US citizens and citizens from arrest and prolonged detention, which poses an imminent risk to their safety," the State Department said in a memorandum set to be published in the Federal Register on Wednesday, which is signed by Secretary of State Anthony Blinken. physical.”


The ban was introduced in 2017 and has been renewed every year since then. The extension of the ban comes in light of escalating tensions with North Korea.


Under the ban, it is illegal to use a US passport to travel to, from, or through North Korea, unless it is based on a national interest. While the order remains in effect until August 31, 2024, unless it is extended or cancelled.


North Korean Defense Minister Kang Sun Nam accused the United States of turning the Korean peninsula into an arena for nuclear war.


North Korea's official news agency also warned, on Tuesday, that joint military exercises between South Korea and the United States could lead to a "thermonuclear war."
